Campfire in the Moroccan Sahara on a starry January night near Merzouga

Morocco in January: Weather, Crowds & Honest Local Advice

January is one of Morocco’s best-value months: mild sunny days (18–23°C in the desert, 12–18°C on the coast), the lowest prices of the year, snow on the Atlas peaks — and cold nights you need to pack for. If you want Morocco without the crowds, this is it.

We are Happy Morocco Travel, an Amazigh-owned tour company based in Rissani, beside the Sahara, and January is when we take our own slow trips through the country. Here’s the honest picture.

January Weather in Morocco

  • Marrakech & Fes: 8–18°C — sunny afternoons, cold evenings
  • Sahara (Merzouga): 18–23°C days, near-freezing nights — our camps have thick blankets and wood stoves
  • Coast (Essaouira, Casablanca): 12–18°C, occasional rain
  • Atlas Mountains: snow — beautiful to photograph, some high passes slow

Why We Like January

Empty dunes. You can have a sunrise at Erg Chebbi almost to yourself — something impossible in April. Riads drop their prices, the light is crisp for photography, and the cities are relaxed. The trade-offs are real too: short daylight, cold desert nights, and the mountains need flexibility.

For travellers from the US and Australia: January flights are usually the cheapest of the year, and Morocco is one of the few warm-ish, dry-ish winter escapes that doesn’t require a resort.

What to Do in Morocco in January

The full classic loop works: cities, gorges and the desert. Our 5-day itinerary is a great January pick — short, sunny and affordable — and the 3-day desert tour from Marrakech gives you the dunes at their quietest. Pack proper layers and the desert night is wonderful: clear skies, no crowds, unbeatable stars.

Morocco in January: FAQ

Is January a good time to visit Morocco?

Yes — for value, quiet and clear winter light. Days are mild and sunny; nights are cold, especially in the desert and mountains. It’s our favourite month for travellers who dislike crowds.

Is the Sahara too cold in January?

Days are lovely (18–23°C). Nights drop near freezing — good camps provide thick blankets and stoves, and you sleep warm. Pack thermal layers for the evening by the fire.

Does it rain in Morocco in January?

Some, mostly on the coast and in the north; the desert stays dry. Rain comes in short spells, not washed-out weeks.
