We leave Marrakech early and climb the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m) into the High Atlas, stopping where the views — and the mint tea — are best. Late morning at the UNESCO kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, walking the same mud-brick lanes you’ve seen in a dozen films. Lunch in Ouarzazate, then along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to the Dades Valley for the night in a local riad. Around 320 km — broken into easy, scenic stages.
Morning in the Todra Gorge, where 300-metre canyon walls narrow to a river you can walk along. After lunch we reach Merzouga and swap the car for camels: an hour’s ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes as the sand turns gold, then sunset from the dune crest. Dinner by the fire, Berber drums, and a night in our desert camp under more stars than you’ve ever seen. This is our backyard — the camp crew are people we’ve known all our lives.
Wake before dawn for sunrise over the dunes — the moment everyone photographs and nobody forgets — then breakfast at the camp and back across the desert plain. We return over the Atlas by the southern route, stopping at Agdz or Ouarzazate for lunch, and reach Marrakech by early evening. It’s the longest driving day, so we break it well; ask us about finishing in Fes instead if that suits your route.
